January 2003 - LAW STUDENTS ASSOCIATION UPDATES

I hope that 2003 has gotten off to a great start for everyone! The LSA Executive has had a busy month in January, planning for upcoming social and charity events. Many of us participated in Law Show, which I hope you all enjoyed. The LSA was very pleased to have donated $750 to this year's Show, to be put towards cast expenses. Thank you again to all the law students who sang, danced, acted, directed, or in any other way volunteered for such a worthy cause, the Kara Family Support Centre.

The weather was not cooperative in the early part of January, which forced us to cancel the Icebreaker on January 10. However, the first FABS of 2003 was a wild success, replete with karaoke, beer, coolers and pizza. Watch for upcoming FABS - a great way to socialize with your peers, meet new friends and make an ass of yourself (if you so choose!) Thanks to everyone for making it such a hit.

The next big function is the infamous CARBOLIC SMOKE BALL! It will be held on Thursday, February 13 at the Crowne Plaza, and tickets will be sold the week of January 27th. Prices are $35 for LSA members and $45 for non-members. It is one classy event, with a wonderful dinner, followed by each year's video presentation and then a dance. There are also some fabulous door prizes to be won. You don't want to miss it!

While Spring seems awfully far off given the recent temperatures, we have begun to plan for the LSA elections.  Nominations for all positions open on March 3 and close March 7.  Speeches will be held on March 11, with voting to take place March 12 and 13. Start thinking now about getting involved next year! More details on the available positions will be made available in late February, and don't hesitate to talk to any LSA exec. member about throwing your hat into the ring.

Each year, the LSA sponsors the Mustard Seed Ministry and this year we have offered to help out with their Wednesday Night Food Bank and Coffee Bar. We have booked March 12th and March 19th from 6:00-8:00 to run the coffee bar and help distribute food hampers. We require 8 students on each evening, and sign-up sheets will be posted on the LSA Board in early March. It's a very small time commitment to help out those in need, so we look forward to filling up the sheets quickly.

Jana Prete, our VP Sports, has planned an LSA Curling event, on Friday March 14. Watch for more details on this!

Other Bits of Information

  • Thanks to all students, faculty and staff for their generosity in giving to the Food Bank over the month of December. We came up with a donation of 90 kg of food, which was greatly appreciated.
  • We also made a donation to the Food Bank of $300, which represented half of the ticket sales from the LSA Holiday Turkey Lunch. Thanks for all who attended and if you didn't, be sure to come next year!
  • VP Academic Tim Outerbridge has once again done a fabulous job in getting CAN sales going for this term.
  • Check out the LSA Exec's Winter Office Hours, posted on our door. Drop by any with questions and concerns you have.
